Nursing Division

The Morgan County Health Department (MCHD) Nursing Division is open Monday through Friday from 8am -12 pm and 1 pm - 4 pm.  The office is closed for all government holidays.

The Nursing Division currently employees two full-time nurses and three part-time nurses to provide the following community services.  All services are either free or provided for a nominal fee that may be paid on a cash only basis.  No personal checks, debit cards or credit cards will be accepted.

Immunizations

The MCHD offers vaccines in accordance with guidelines of the Center for Disease Control and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.  The clinics are by appointment and are held on Tuesdays in Martinsville from 9 am - 2:30 pm and Wednesdays in Mooresville from 2 pm - 7 pm.  There is an administrative fee of $5.00 per visit or maximum of $10.00 per family.  Cash only, no debit cards or personal checks will be accepted.  No child will be denied services due to an inability to pay.  Walk-in services are available if time permits.

Immunizations are available for children from 2 months through 18 years of age.  A parent or legal guardian must accompany any child between the ages of 2 months through 17 years on each visit.  If the parent/guardian is unable to come, a signed and dated note must accompany another adult authorizing the administration of vaccinations.  A current shot record must be brought in for the visit or shots will not be administered.

The tetanus vaccine is the only immunization available to adults on a regular basis at this time.

No visits will be rescheduled for a minimum of one year following repeated appointment cancellations or no-shows.

Well-Child Clinic

The well-child clinics are by appointment only and are held in Martinsville on Thursdays for children ages 2 months through 5 years of age.  The first visit is with a licensed pediatrician and all visits follow the growth and development guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  Copies of the well-child clinic record are sent to the child's current provider, therefore, a signed doctor's note acknowledging these services is preferred.

Head Start physicals may be provided during well-child clinics.  Anyone failing to make the scheduled appointment will need to be seen by a family physician.  The physical will not be rescheduled at this facility.

Blood Pressures

Free screenings are available at the health department on a walk-in basis, as time permits.  Blood pressure clinics are currently available once each month at the Martinsville, Mooresville, and Morgantown Senior Citizen Centers.

Tuberculosis (TB) Testing

Mantoux TB skin tests are available by appointment to individuals from four years of age through adult on Mondays from 8-9 am or 2-3:30 pm and on Fridays from 8-10 am or 2-3:30 pm. Each person receiving a TB test must be available to return to the clinic to have the site checked on Thursday (if administered on Monday) or Monday (if administered on Friday).  The client must return on the appointed day for the results or the test will be invalid.  A fee of $5 (cash only) must be paid before the test is administered.  Current policy states that this health department does not read TB skin tests performed at other facilities.

The following individuals should be screened for TB:

Close contacts of persons known or suspected to have TB (e.g. sharing the same household or other enclosed environments)

Persons infected with HIV

Persons with certain conditions known to increase the risk for disease if infection occurs

Persons who inject illicit drugs

Residents and employees of high-risk congregate settings (e.g. nursing homes, correctional facilities, mental institutions, other long-term care facilities, and homeless shelters)

Healthcare workers serving high-risk clients

Persons born outside the US and Canada, including children.  Prior vaccination with BCG is not a contraindication for testing, nor does it affect the treatment protocol

Infants, children, and adolescents exposed to adults in high-risk categories

Locally defined high prevalence groups (substance abusers, migrant workers, the homeless)

TB tests are required for the following jobs and/or schools:

Employees of licensed child care facilities

College Students

Foster parents/families

Community Corrections (Work Release)

Healthcare personnel

Please call our office at (765) 342-6621 if you have any questions.

Cholesterol and Glucose Screening

Cholesterol and blood sugar screenings are available by appointment on the 4th Friday of each month from 8:30 - 10:30 am.  The cost is $20 and results are available in five minutes.  Do not eat or drink anything other than water or black coffee after midnight the night before testing.

Lead and Hemoglobin Screening

Lead and hemoglobin screenings are available by appointment or in conjunction with Well-Child Clinic visits.  The lead screening is free and results are available in 2-4 weeks.  The hemoglobin screening is $3 and results are available immediately.  Testing for both lead and hemoglobin require a finger- or toe-stick (capillary) specimen. Screening is recommended for 1 and 2 year olds or other children or adults at high risk (e.g. working with lead-based paint, stained glass windows, or the smelting process).

Epidemiology

Education, tracking, and follow-up of communicable diseases are mandatory in accordance with the Indiana State Department of Health.  The nursing division contacts individuals or the parents of children involved in communicable disease cases.  Personal information is kept confidential and most interviews will be completed by telephone.

Head Lice Program

Screening for head lice is available by appointment only.  Do not bring anyone with head lice into the clinic without prior approval.  A non-toxic shampoo that is safe for everyone is available to families meeting financial restrictions.  This assistance is only available once a year per family and only as funding allows.

Local Health Maintenance

Emergency medication assistance may be available for individuals in need.  This assistance is only available one time each year for persons meeting financial restrictions, as funding permits.

Influenza (Flu) Vaccinations

The flu vaccine is normally available by appointment beginning mid-October until supplies are depleted.  The current fee for adults is $20 per shot, cash only.  Fees for children that qualify through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program are $5 per shot or $5 for the FluMist.

The Morgan County Health Department is not a Medicaid or Medicare provider.

Freedom from Smoking

This program is only available by appointment for adults 18 years and older.  There is a $20 registration fee that will be refunded if the participant attends all classes scheduled in the series.  The program is based on the American Lung Association curriculum and is offered quarterly at sites in Martinsville and Mooresville.  The facilitator provides workbooks, strategies, contacts, and motivation to aid in the success of the participant.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

CPR training is available by appointment and is held on the 4th Monday of each month.  The training booklet must be purchased at the health department for $10, cash only, in advance.
